תְּשׁוּבָה

Return Was Possible Because Separation Was Never Absolute

The descent is real. The second source is not.

The descent is real

Chassidic Development

Nothing in this chapter should be read as minimising wrongdoing. Chassidus is unusually severe about the reality of damage: to others, to oneself, to the relationship. Sin is not an illusion, a learning experience, or a necessary stage.

What the sources deny is something else — that wrongdoing constitutes an independent power, or that it can place a person outside the reach of the Source. Estrangement is real as estrangement. It is not real as separation from being.

This is the direct consequence of everything established earlier. If existence is continuously given, then even the person in the deepest concealment is being sustained, at this moment, by the One they are concealed from.

The descent is real. The second source is not.

What return means

Classical Source

he:תְּשׁוּבָה means return, not repentance, and the difference is not merely etymological. Repentance suggests the repair of a broken relation. Return suggests a relation that persisted while one was away.

The Chassidic reading takes the second sense seriously. The reason return is possible at any moment, without preconditions and without intermediaries, is that the connection was never actually severed — only obscured, sometimes catastrophically, from the side of the one who left.

Zdonot as merits

Classical Source

זְדוֹנוֹת נַעֲשׂוֹת לוֹ כִּזְכֻיּוֹת

Deliberate wrongs become for him as merits.

Yoma 86b
Classical SourceStated of teshuvah motivated by love. The preceding line, of teshuvah motivated by fear, says only that they become as inadvertent acts.

Yoma 86b records two statements in sequence. Teshuvah from fear converts deliberate wrongs into inadvertent ones. Teshuvah from love converts them into merits.

The second statement is extraordinary and should not be softened. It does not say that the wrongs are forgiven, forgotten or outweighed. It says they become merits — that the very acts themselves are reckoned to the person's credit.

Read through the circuit, this is or chozer at its most complete. Light that descended into the deepest concealment and was returned from there carries something that light which never descended does not have. The return is not a restoration of the previous position. It is the arrival of something new — and the newness comes from the depth, not in spite of it.
