The purpose

דִּירָה בַּתַּחְתּוֹנִים

Why the Infinite Desires the Lowest Place

The Infinite does not ask the finite to disappear. He asks the finite to become transparent to its Source.

The teaching

Classical Source

נִתְאַוָּה הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לִהְיוֹת לוֹ יִתְבָּרֵךְ דִּירָה בַּתַּחְתּוֹנִים

The Holy One, blessed be He, desired a dwelling in the lower realms.

Midrash Tanchuma, Naso 16; cited in Tanya, ch. 36
Classical SourceTanya takes this Midrashic statement as the purpose of the entire order of creation, and reads the descent through the worlds as the approach to it.

The Midrash records that the Holy One desired he:דִּירָה בַּתַּחְתּוֹנִים — a dwelling in the lower realms. Tanya, in chapter 36, takes this brief statement and makes it the purpose of creation as a whole.

The word he:דִּירָה is doing precise work. A dwelling is not a visit, an appearance or a manifestation. It is where someone lives. And the word he:תַּחְתּוֹנִים is doing equally precise work: not the higher realms, not the spiritual worlds, but the lowest — this one.

Everything in the cosmology is reorganised by this claim. The descent through the worlds is not a decline to be reversed. It is the approach to a destination.

Why not the higher worlds

Chassidic Development

The spiritual worlds are more revealed, more refined and more transparent to Divine light. It is natural to assume they are therefore closer to the purpose, and the sources say plainly that they are not.

The reason given is precise. The higher worlds reveal light, and light is not Essence. A world that perceives Divine light clearly is receiving something magnificent, but it is receiving a revelation — and revelation is always measured, always graded, always a matter of more and less.

Atzmus is not restricted by spiritual hierarchy, because Atzmus is prior to the distinction between infinite and finite. Essence is therefore not more available in a refined world than in an opaque one. And where Essence is concerned, the opaque world has something the refined one does not: it is the place where being found is not a matter of degree.

A dwelling made here — in the one region that could plausibly claim to be independent — demonstrates that nothing is independent.

Concealment and matter

Chassidic Development

Physicality conceals. That is its defining property in this literature: matter presents itself as self-sufficient, and offers no evidence of its Source.

This is precisely what qualifies it. A dwelling made in a place that already displayed the Divine would demonstrate nothing about the Divine that the place did not already show. A dwelling made here — in the one region that could plausibly claim to be independent — demonstrates that nothing is independent.

Hence the mitzvot, and hence their stubborn physicality. Leather becomes tefillin. Parchment becomes mezuzah. Bread becomes part of a mitzvah meal. Money becomes tzedakah. A home becomes a he:מִקְדָּשׁ מְעַט, a small sanctuary.

In none of these does the material disappear. That is the entire achievement.

Leather becomes tefillin.

Parchment becomes mezuzah.

Bread becomes part of a mitzvah meal.

Money becomes tzedakah.

A home becomes mikdash me'at.
