גִּילּוּי

The Circuit of Giving and Return

The light that descends is not another light from the light that returns. What changes is direction, and what the recipient has done in between.

אוֹר יָשָׁר

Direct Light

  • Giving.
  • Transmission.
  • Structure.
  • Definition.
  • Mission.

אוֹר חוֹזֵר

Returning Light

  • Receiving.
  • Metabolisation.
  • Embodiment.
  • Response.
  • Return.

The light that descends is not another light from the light that returns.

The circuit is complete when the recipient can answer.

Or Yashar and Or Chozer

Classical Source

Classical Kabbalah describes two directions of the same light. אוֹר יָשָׁר, direct light, proceeds from source toward recipient. אוֹר חוֹזֵר, returning light, is what the recipient reflects back.

It is important to hear how strange the second term is. Returning light is not the recipient's own contribution added to G-d's. The recipient has no independent stock of light. What returns is the same light, having passed through something able to receive it — and it returns changed, not in substance, but in that it now carries a response.

The site treats this as the central structural fact of the whole cosmology. A universe of pure descent would be an unbroken monologue. Or chozer is what makes the arrangement a relationship rather than a broadcast.

יֵשׁ מֵאַיִן

The Mystery of Something From Nothing

Chassidic Development

Creation יֵשׁ מֵאַיִן — something from nothing — is usually heard as a claim about origins: once there was nothing, then there was something.

Chassidus reverses the terms. From below, the world is obviously יֵשׁ, substantial and self-evident, and its Source is אַיִן, an absence, a nothing, precisely because it cannot be located, measured or perceived. From above, the Divine Source is the only true reality, and created existence is the אַיִן — not because it is imaginary, but because it possesses no being of its own.

This is not a claim that the world is unreal. The table is a table; the suffering is suffering; the mitzvah performed with a physical object is performed with a physical object. Creation is real as created reality. What it never is, is independent reality.

From below

The world appears as yesh.

The Source appears as ayin.

From above

The Divine Source is true Reality.

Created existence possesses no independent source.

Creation is real as created reality, but never independent reality.

Memale and Sovev

Chassidic Development

Two modes of Divine presence are distinguished throughout Chassidus, and confusing them produces immediate errors.

מְמַלֵּא כָּל עָלְמִין — filling all worlds — is Divine vitality as it is internalised, measured precisely according to the capacity of each world and each recipient. It is why a creature has this life and not another, and why the vitality within a stone differs from the vitality within a mind.

סוֹבֵב כָּל עָלְמִין — surrounding all worlds — is Divine presence that exceeds what any world can internalise. It is not spatially outside. It surrounds in the sense that it is present without being contained: equally present to the highest and the lowest, because it is not being received in a measured way at all.

And then Chassidus makes its most characteristic move. Atzmus is not a third, larger ring beyond sovev. Essence is not more surrounding than surrounding. It is prior to the distinction between filling and surrounding altogether — which is exactly why Essence can be found in the lowest place without descent.
