דַּעַת
Da'at — Knowledge as Attachment
Knowledge in Torah is not information. It is connection.
Core contrast
Chavah Kadmonah LensClassical orientation
- Choosing the curriculum.
Chavah Kadmonah orientation
- Holding the student.
Classical orientationDa'at is the faculty that makes knowledge binding: attention, commitment, the decision that this and not that will occupy the mind. Without it, understanding remains an inventory of things one happens to know.
Chavah Kadmonah orientationThe same faculty, read relationally, is the knowledge that holds. Torah uses יָדַע for the most intimate human connection — וְהָאָדָם יָדַע אֶת חַוָּה — and the usage is not a euphemism. It is a claim about what knowing is.
Da'at
Classical SourceDa'at is the station where the framework's two orientations are most obviously already present in the sources, which is why the site treats it as a hinge.
Covenant is the political form of this idea. A covenant is not an agreement between parties who remain external to each other; it is a binding that changes what each party is. This is why Torah describes the relationship between G-d and Israel in the vocabulary of marriage rather than the vocabulary of contract.
And it is why the Messianic promise is stated in terms of knowledge. The world does not lack information about G-d. It lacks attachment.
Knowledge in Torah is not information. It is connection.
Ein Sof implication
Chassidic Developmentדַּעַת ה׳, knowledge of G-d, is therefore not a body of doctrine that will be distributed in the Messianic era. It is a form of attachment that will become universal. The verse says the earth will be filled with it, the way water fills a sea bed — not the way a library is filled with books.
Avodah
Chassidic DevelopmentTo make Torah study an act of attachment rather than acquisition. To hold what one knows, and to be held by it.
SourceBereishit 4:1 and Yeshayahu 11:9. The identification of da'at with attachment is classical and is developed throughout Chassidus.
כִּי מָלְאָה הָאָרֶץ דֵּעָה אֶת ה׳ כַּמַּיִם לַיָּם מְכַסִּים
For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the L-rd as the waters cover the sea.
