The Infinite at Home
The world was never empty of G-d. The work is to make that hidden presence inhabitable.
Tzimtzum: He makes room for us.
Mitzvah: we make room for Him.
He makes the chalal.
We make the dirah.
Every movement described on this site converges here, and it is worth saying plainly how strange the destination is.
The literature begins in boundlessness that offers no foothold. It passes through a concealment vast enough to make a universe possible, a single line of measured light, an architecture of ten stations, four worlds and an unbroken chain of descent. And it ends at a table.
Not because the table is a symbol of something grander. Because the table is the place.
There is a symmetry in the two halves of the work that the sources return to constantly. He withholds His presence so that we can be here. We arrange our presence so that He can be here. Neither movement is complete without the other, and neither is a metaphor for the other.
The world was never empty of G-d. The work is to make that hidden presence inhabitable.
